Primitive Theater

So our second assignment was due last Friday, the Primitive Theater. I'm feeling okay with it because it's definitely better than my ball bounce so I can tell that I'm improving. I wish we had another week with it so that I could fix my lighting, which I hardly had any time to finish, and just tweak it a bit more... maybe make the characters more saturated so they stand out from their environment more. Overall I'm liking the motion, and I think I'm getting the hang of how to create overlapping motion in 3D.

Anyway, here it is is: PRIMITIVE THEATER

Enjoy! :)

Lots of Homwork

My latest Concept homework:

We've been doing projects that deal with creating depth and using dynamic staging. The first project was a story involving frogs; one is playing a banjo poorly, someone throws a tomato at him, and he jumps and dodges it. There are all these rules yada yada yada about only having 5 shots (so only 4 cuts), etc.

Here are my FROGS

The second assignment I just turned in today and it has two parts. The story involved rats playing pool, where one chalks his cue stick loudly causing the other to miss his shot. The first part of the project was to do an animatic using photographs you take.

Here is my PHOTO ANIMATIC

The second part was then to take those photos and use them as reference for drawing your own rat animatic of the same story.

Here are my RODENTS

Enjoy!!

Animatic In Progress

So here's my ALMOST finished animatic for Concept Development class. I still need to work on the audio, add some background music to set the mood, and do another pass on the drawing to add more entertainment.

Here's the revised version when I added a couple more drawings and sound

AVATAR

So... this movie looks absolutely AMAZE-A-ZING to me! It comes out on December 18th this year, so I'll be home by then and I can watch it with everyone. I shall be dragging my friends to the theater to see this, and I won't take NO for an answer! The movie Avatar is directed/created by James Cameron, and apparently it's his first film in 12 years (since Titanic came out in 1997).

The premise of the story follows a former Marine, Jake Sully, who was paralyzed in combat on Earth. He has been selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will let him be able to walk. He travels to Pandora, an alien jungle moon filled unbelievable creatures. It is also home to the Na'vi, a humanoid race that lives in harmony with their world. But the humans are stretching farther into their world in search of valuable minerals, and forcing them to defend their existence. Jake has been unwittingly recruited to become a spy for the humans, since humans cannot breathe the air on Pandora, they have genetically bred human-Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars. They are living bodies controlled by a human "driver" by linking the driver's mind to their Avatar body. Yet, in true James Cameron fashion, he has turned it into a love story :) Jake meets a young Na'vi female, Neytiri, and begins to fall in love. So he then finds himself caught between the military forces of Earth, and the Na'vi.

Stress

It's midterm time now, and so far this semester has been ABSOLUTELY INSANE. I have been challenged to the extreme, and usually I can adapt and work out my time management, but I seem to be on overload and haven't been able to. I'm surprised that I've been able to actually turn everything in on-time, although I've had to pull quite a few all-nighters. This last week I've tried a different work schedule and it worked out well, so it's starting to get better.

I've never had so many instances where I've felt hopeless in regards to finishing an assignment on-time. In part I think being a perfectionist isn't helping because I tend to spend more time on each assignment improving it, when the first draft would have sufficed. But.... that's why my teachers like me :) lol

I'm positive I'm not the only one having troubles like this, it's hard to distribute yourself evening for the 3 CA major classes this semester. It's a process that you need to work at to really succeed in this major. That, and you HAVE to meet ALL the criteria for assignments and make sure you reach the deadline on-time. There is no LATE in the Computer Animation industry, so it only makes since that there isn't a "late" in our classes. Not to mention that I also have two electives aside from my CA classes.

On another note, we've started our Primitive Theater assignment in CA, and I'll be working on that until around the end of October. I'm keeping the story extremely simple because I just want to work on improving my animation. My ball bounce wasn't all that great, and I'm hoping to maybe fix it up over winter break so that it can be a portfolio piece. Maybe.

Animatic

We are to make animatics of our storyboards using Photoshop and Premiere Pro, and this is my third pass, which is just about complete. Over the weekend I need to completely finish the drawings, then add sound to it.

We went into the sound room last class period and had most of the class read the lines in the story so we have some material to work with. I was one of the people who got recorded, and I found out that I sound like Meg from Family Guy when recorded.... kind of funny lol

Concept Development

My Concept Development class is pretty intense, but a lot of fun. Right now we're learning about film language and storyboarding for animation. We're using a story from Steve Martin's novel Cruel Shoes called "The Gift of the Magi Indian Giver."

Here's the story:

-----

Carolyn wanted so much to give Roger something nice for Christmas, but they
didn't have much money, and they had to spend every last cent on candy for the baby. She walked down the icy streets and peered into shop windows. "Roger is so proud of his shinebones. If only I could find some way to get money to buy shinebone polish."

Just then, a sign caught her eye. "Cuticles bought and sold." Many people had told Carolyn of her beautiful cuticles, and Roger was especially proud of them, but she though, "This is the way I could buy Roger the shinebone polish!" And she rushed into the store.

Later at home, she waited anxiously as Roger came up the steps of their flat. He opened the door and wobbled over to the fireplace, suspiciously holding one arm behind his back.

"Merry Christmas!" they both said, almost simultaneously.

Roger spoke. "Hey, Nutsy, I got you a little something for Christmas." "Me too," said Carolyn, and they exchanged packages.

Carolyn hurriedly opened her package staring in disbelief. "Cuticle frames?!" But Roger, I sold my cuticles so I could afford to buy you some shinebone polish!"

"Shinebone polish!" said Roger, "I sold my shinebones to buy you the cuticle frames!" Roger wobbled over to her.

"Well, I'll be hog-tied," said Carolyn.

"You will? Oh, boy!" said Roger.

And it turned out to be a great Christmas after all.

-----

Here's my set design

The part of the story we're
working on starts when Roger comes home and they both say "Merry Christmas!" until the end. Our first assignment for this story was to draw the iconic moment when Roger shows Carolyn his missing shinebones, so here that is:

Quadruped Walk

So we've not moved onto quadruped walk cycles, and I chose to use a giraffe. Haven't named her yet though. A giraffe has a very unique walk, and it was interesting trying to get it to look right. I'm fixing the back leg closest to the viewer because it's still a bit off, but the rest is working well.

My second assignment for Traditional Animation II was to take that same character from the walk cycle (in my case Dale) and do a 10 second pantomime. It's not the best it could be because I was trying to get work done on my ball bounce for CA, plus I had already done a pantomime last spring so I didn't want to do it

Dale Walk/Run Cycle

Our first assignment for Traditional Animation was to design a biped character and make them walk. I chose to use my anteater Dale again for this, and he must show a change in emotion in the walk. Here's Dale!

Ball Bounce

So my first assignment for Computer Animation was to make a sequence with two balls, one that's animated (alive) ball, and one that's a regular ball. This is it:

It's not THAT bad, but I wish I had more time to work on the timing and smooth out the actual motion of the balls. I had some trouble getting my rigging to work in the beginning so I didn't have as much time as I would have like to "polish"
